As many as 3 million Mexican farmers and their families were driven into bankruptcy after American agro-businesses, because of NAFTA, began to flood the market with cheap corn. This contributed to the creation of an economic vacuum filled by financial speculators and drug cartels. The drug cartels in Mexico conduct a $30-billion-a-year business.
